Christina Green

Christina Green - Composer

Christina's journey as a composer began in undergraduate years at the University of Melbourne, where she completed a year of composition study working with Peter Tahourdin, and also with Donald Erb, who visited the Faculty of Music from the US that year.  This beginning was mostly in atonal, experimental and serialism-informed works.  After completing undergraduate studies, Christina moved into composition of choral, art song and theatre music, overlapping her activities as a performing songwriter, and moving into a more tonal realm.  Following many years of focus on songwriting and performing, Christina moved into composing short instrumental works (2006-2008), initially with a world music flavour, and then into a style fusing classical and jazz elements from 2007, with piano and guitar music performed by herself and collaborators in various contexts including the Brunswick Composing Women's Group, ReGroup, Dandenong Ranges and at the Sacred Stage concerts of Melbourne composer/singer Jacqui Rutten.  At the same time she took up opportunities through masters' degree study at the University of Melbourne with teachers Katy Abbott Kvasnica, Julian Yu and Stuart Greenbaum, to write for ensembles such as the Southern Cross Philharmonia Orchestra (Free!, 2008) and organist Kieran Crichton (Hozhoni, 2008), and to have works for piano and wind quartet performed by UK performers Jamie Crofts and the London New Wind Ensemble.  From 2009 Christina moved into collaborative work, producing Cosmos - video with music with video artist Josephine Telfer, Six Songs and a Bunch of Roses - song cycle with poet Judith Pugh, the Suite from Sighting Silence, Sounding Image - linked visual art/music work with visual artist Flossie Peitsch (created on residency at the Bundanon Arts Trust, Shoalhaven Region, NSW), and No Excuses! - choral suite with conductor/composer Kathleen McGuire, commissioned by the School of Hard Knocks.  As part of this work Christina has performed and recorded as a pianist and singer/guitarist. In recent years, under the supervision of Dr Clare Maclean of Western Sydney University, Christina has composed works for piano, percussion, ukulele/voice, winds and other combos, for performers including Sydney percussionist Kaylie Dunstan, the Sydney Youth Orchestras (wind quintet) and NYC 'lung-powered' quartet Loadbang, becoming increasingly established as a composer working towards a DCA (Doctor of Creative Arts), gaining representation as an associate with the Australian Music Centre and acceptance of works for publication by Wirripang: Home of Australian Composers, Wollongong (see AMC and Wirripang links on the About page).  A selection of works can be listened to on her SoundCloud page, linked at the top of the page.  Scores can be purchased from Wirripang (see link) or from the composer direct (self-published scores, please enquire via contact form).
