Christina Green is an accomplished songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist writing primarily in folk, folk/rock and cabaret idioms. Her observational, image-rich and storytelling-focused songs draw on inspiration from everyday life, and, delivered with strong guitar work reminiscent of folk artists of an earlier time, and a voice that is often described by listeners as beautiful, they delight audiences across cultures and contexts. Based in Melbourne, Christina has also lived and worked in London, connecting with musicians in the acoustic/folk scene there, recording and performing widely.
Christina’s songs tell stories of people and events that have inspired her, and bring together politics, spirituality, quirky/humorous vignettes and tales, and personal stories. A sense of place and journey also feature in many of her songs, reflecting her love of travel. Songs about the environment are now a particular focus.
Coming from a musical family, Christina began writing songs at school. Absorbing musical inspiration from songwriters including the Indigo Girls and Canadians Kate and Anna McGarrigle and Ferron, as well as from traditional and activist folk, folk/rock, blues/jazz, punk, cabaret/chanson and other music, she has developed a style that is wide-ranging but underpinned by a recognisable lyric voice. Since 2011, an exploration of the ukulele has created a new strand, opening the door to new songs straddling the border of folk and art music.
Drawing on years of composition study, Christina includes a range of instrumentals in her sets. As a composer, her Suite from Sighting Silence, Sounding Image for solo piano (2013), begun on residency at Bundanon Arts Trust NSW with visual art collaborator Flossie Peitsch in 2012, won the student composition award for 2014 at Western Sydney University. As a songwriter Christina has been a finalist in the Roddy Read Memorial Song Contest at Maldon Folk Festival, Central Victoria four times, and achieved a second place in the Darebin Music Feast Songwriters’ Awards in 2006 with Walkin’ Down Smith Street.
